Grammys lose their lustre

It just seems to me that music really had a crummy year in 2005. The Grammys were last night and I didn't even know they were on. I used to care about the Grammys, but the state of popular music has gotten so bad they're not even worth watching. When the big winners of the night are U2, a band that released a subpar album filled with Joshua Tree era riffs, then try and hail it as their best work in ages, something is definitely wrong. This award show could have happened in 1994, with U2, Green Day, Mariah Carey and Stevie Wonder winning awards.

The Grammys are so ridiculously out of touch with the whole music industry and essentially serve to reward past success, deserved or not. How else can you explain deplorable stuff like 'Do You Want To' by Franz Ferdinand being even nominated aside from the fact they missed the boat on 'Take Me Out'? Just look at the best solo rock performance category, where 4 of the 5 nominees(Bruce Springsteen, Robert Plant, Neil Young and Eric Clapton) had thriving careers in the 1970's and some in the 1960's. Les Paul, guitar maker and general guitar genius won a Grammy at age 90 for his first album in almost 30 years. Getting a Grammy at this point almost seems more alike to a lifetime achievement award.

I don't wish to take away anything from these artists and their longevity, but it gets to a point where these award committees have to look past the big names of yesteryear and see what is actually going on in the music world.

Yea I have to agree on this. As I was watching I just felt a few people who won didn't really deserve it over who was nominated. I also felt for who was nominated shouldn't even have been in that spot over other great talent.

A Simpson's episode comes to mind. Homer wins a grammy. Gets depressed at being so removed from his family and offers his grammy to the bell hop...

    "A major award!... awww... it's a grammy!"
    Tosses Grammy from balcony.
Man under balcony throws Grammy back.

"Hey, don't throw your trash down here..."

. The Grammys were last night and I didn't even know they were on.

Neither did I! Is that weird or what?! I usually love watching the Grammys. Seems like they haven't been publicizing them enough or something. I'm watching (actually listening to - it's on the living room) the re-run as I type this.

I already know who got what. I think it's awesome U2 won so many! They rock.

Our tastes differ. But on the yesteryear note, you're right, Stevie Wonder and those other chaps weren't as good as some of the other music this year. I really liked Gwen Stefani's album and Kelly Clarkson was really really a-o-k. She didn't deserve two Grammys, not even 1 for that matter.

As a professiional drummer/ musician for many years, I have to say that much of today's commerical music sucks. It's all about production and image, and what ever can be inserted into the mix to distract the on looker-listener from hearing what's not there.
